What No Parent Should Have to Apologize For

Not long ago I watched a famous person talk about the first time he got his big break on a late night talk show. Right after the show, he spoke with his mom. He recalled the first thing she commented to him about was his usage of swear words throughout the show. The son was absolutely deflated by his mother’s comments. He could not believe that at the moment of his greatest accomplishment, she focused on his swearing. Much later in time, he said he did receive an apology from his mother.

Apology needed?

Listening to this man I completely concurred with the sentiments of his mother’s first reaction. There is something to be said for one’s “timing” when giving a critique, to be sure. His mother still could have gotten her point across if she brought up his swearing more gently later on, or at another time altogether. However, the fact of the matter remains: this mother was concerned about the dignity and integrity of her son.

As a mother, my main concern would have been my child’s offense to God and the example he/she was displaying for others. As a parent, those concerns should always be at the heart of our messages to our children. Will our children always be perfect? No. Are we always perfect? No. However, we must strive higher in our ideals, morals and the ways in which we conduct ourselves. Whether we are famous or not we have influence. We influence and mentor those around us each and every day with our words and actions.

Stay Strong

We must remember to remain strong and not “cave” to pressures from our children if they fail to recognize a chastisement born out of love. For this kind of chastisement is meant to warrant them far greater respect in the eyes of God and men. Prudence with timing is important, but holy criticism is nothing to apologize for. The more we aim for holiness with our words and actions, the more we approach the ultimate prize of sanctification.
